1. WHAT IS "PRANAYAMA PRESS"?
The main purpose of "Pranayama Press" is educational. This issue
focuses on Community Service ("Karma Yoga") and doing good works.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
2. INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE:
"How far can you go without destroying from within what you are
trying to defend from without?"
Dwight D. Eisenhower (from Rotary Reporter)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3. NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM: TWO WOLVES
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that
goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between
two 'wolves" inside us all.
"One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,
arrogance, self-pity, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride,
superiority and ego."
"The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth,
compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather, "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The One you feed."
(From "Deliver Me Light" online news)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4. ARAMAIC, THE LANGUAGE OF JESUS:
Aramaic is the native language of Jesus. In light of the Cherokee
story above, good and evil in language can be seen in varying
perspectives. In the translation from Aramaic to Hebrew to Greek
to Latin, original meanings can be altered.
"Good" in English is originally "ripe" in Aramaic, and "evil" is
originally "unripe". In this sense, there is hope for our human
and spiritual potential to develop with good deeds and thoughts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5. BHAGAVAD GITA: THE INDIVIDUAL'S QUEST:
The Bhagavad Gita ("Song of God") is the most popular and widely
revered of all Hindu scriptures. Lord Krishna and Arjuna's
discussion on the strategy for defeating rivals in battle, is an
allegory of the personal struggle for liberation. The earthly foe
represents the enemy of the human soul and the military strategy
is the individual's quest for spiritual salvation.
Arjuna asks Krishna what makes someone commit sinful acts which
bring suffering and unhappiness.
Krishna replies that the real enemy is selfish desire, which is
like an insatiable fire. Desire is the enemy of the wise and
destroyer of self-understanding.
(3:37,39)

6. KYRGYZSTAN COOPERATIVES HELP CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY:
What we do for one we do for all.
Karma Yoga is a path to self realization. Volunteer service helps
others, yet it opens our own hearts.“Service Above Self”, the
Rotary International motto, describes it well.
While living overseas, I received many acts of kindness. So, I
jumped at the opportunity to host two indigenous women from a
poor mountainous region in Kyrgyzstan bordering China. What a
most rewarding experience!
Hosting Shaarkan and Sharapat was my Karma yoga. Heading up their
handicraft cooperatives in Krygyzstan is their karma yoga. They
help the elderly and children with special needs. My intention is
to help them further in their work in Krygyzstan.
Since they are Muslim, they were delighted when I took them to
the Grand Mosque in Cleveland. I thought a good gift for them
would be to meet the “American Imam.”
Shaarkan and Sharapat did not speak any English at all. We
communicated through gestures, laughter and song. I taught them
my old Girl Scout song, “Make new friends, but keep the old, one
is silver and the other gold.”
Being by water draws us to reflect. It is natural across
cultures. So, when we went to Lake Erie they went onto the pier
and prayed, just as I might sit and meditate. On the beach, some
people might gather sea glass, others collect shells, and
Shaarkan picked little stones representing each member of our
families as a Native American might. Then she gestured to
describe the attribute of the person each stone represented. I
interpreted mine as “grounded, connected to the Earth” and her
husband’s as “big heart”. Communication goes far beyond words.
Such a little thing, yet one of the closest moments we had.
Mother Nature guides us all to Spirit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
7. THE WORLD IS ONE FAMILY ("SANATAN DHARMA"):
In India, it is said, "Vasudhaika Kutumbakam", "The Whole World
is One Family". "Sanatan Dharma" is the principal behind this
attitude.
All people thirst for peace and happiness. These are earned in
society by recognizing the bond which ties person to person. All
people are of one lineage --- the Divine Lineage.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
8. BHUMI'S YOGA TEACHERS DO VOLUNTEER WORK ("KARMA YOGA"):
In the Bhumi's Yoga Teacher Training we emphasize the concept of
"Karma Yoga", volunteering and giving without incentive for
personal reward or gain. Each trainee does a karma yoga project
before receiving their graduation certification.
Then, When these new yoga teachers go out into the community,
they have already embodied the spirit of yoga. While continuing
to take care of their own health in body, mind and spirit, they
also continue to give what they have received.
Last year's new teacher graduates Laura and Maryanne are still
teaching yoga classes at the Domestic Violence Shelter and Edna
House (Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Center).
Mary Ellen for the past three years, has gone monthly to the
Catholic Worker's Storefront to provide meals and hospitality to
the disenfranchised of Cleveland.
Beth, a current trainee, serves by teaching Children's Yoga
classes in a near westside Cleveland Middle School.

9. COOPERATIVE KARMA YOGA: FUNDRAISER EVENT:
Eight yoga studios in the Greater Cleveland area came together
Saturday January 27 for Yoga Day USA. We wanted to bring people
into the downtown area for a day of free mini classes to create
an awareness about the benefits of yoga.
More importantly, "free-will" offerings were donated to the
Cleveland Foodbank and the Cleveland YMCA StrongKids Fund. This
is an example of karma yoga in action among the yoga community.
